It’s easy to see why Winstrol is such a popular choice for those seeking to build lean muscle mass, decrease body fat levels, increase strength and enhance their over all physique. It has been used for decades to create these effects and help bodybuilders, strength athletes and gym goers the world over achieve their goals. However, with the good comes the bad. The question is, therefore, ‘Do the positive effects of Winny outweigh the negative effects?’.
In today’s post, we will delve head-first into this question and explore this powerful cutting anabolic in great detail. If you’re contemplating taking it, we highly recommend you stick around to the end of the post to learn as much as you can.
What is Winstrol?
Winstrol is the brand name of the steroid Stanozolol. Available in both oral and injectable forms, it has been one of the most popular oral steroids since it was first available in the general market in the early 1960s.
It began its life in 1959 as an approved prescription drug, used by doctors to treat a plethora of ailments – including, but not limited to: wasting diseases, Osteoporosis and stunted growth in children. Given its high affinity for androgen receptor binding, it proved to be an effective treatment for these conditions. However, this also proved to be its downfall, as androgenic compounds (such as steroids) can cause negative side effects related to the liver, kidneys, cholesterol, blood pressure and cardiac health; in addition, they will also cause virilization in women and children. For these reasons it was soon discarded by the medical community and instead picked up by bodybuilders, athletes and those looking to sculpt their bodies.
Winstrol was the drug that sprinter Ben Johnson used in the 1988 Seoul Olympics – one of the most high profile doping cases of all time.
What results are possible with Winstrol?
Winstrol is a DHT-derived steroid with an anabolic rating of 200 and an androgenic rating of 20. From these figures it would appear that Winny is very anabolic and not very androgenic, however, those that have used it will certainly assert that it is not as anabolic as it appears on paper – and is certainly more androgenic.
But what can be expected?
Lean Muscle Mass Growth & Preservation
Winstrol certainly isn’t a steroid that will pack on slabs of muscle – but it will produce modest gain in lean muscle provided that both training and diet are conducive to this. It can also be used to preserve muscle mass during cutting cycles.
Strength & Power Gains
Although Winstrol is a modest muscle builder, it is an exceptional strength builder. It has always been a favourite of strength athletes, as it allows those using it to boost strength with little to no increase in body weight.
What are the side effects associated with Winstrol use?
Like all other anabolic steroids, Winstrol will cause negative side effects in those that use it. To what degree a person will suffer from these side effects will depend upon their individual tolerance (genetic), the length of use and the dosage. The only way to know what side effects you’ll experience is to take the oral anabolic and see for yourself.
Here are the most common:
HPTA Shutdown & Testicular Atrophy
Every single anabolic steroid will cause ‘shutdown’ – and Winstrol is no different. ‘Shutdown’ is the process by which the testicles stop producing testosterone due to the brain sensing the exogenous hormones and halting the signals (to the testicles) to produce testosterone. In some cases this can cause testicular atrophy (shrinkage). One way to keep testicles functioning on cycle is to take HCG throughout the duration of the cycle. To reverse HTPA shutdown, users must embark upon a Post Cycle Therapy (PCT) regime.
Like several other oral steroids, Winstrol is 17-alpha-alkylated (also known as methylated). This means the liver needs to break down this bond before the active hormone can be released into the bloodstream. Breaking down this bond is stressful on the liver and can cause toxicity. To minimalise the impact upon the liver, most people cycle Winstrol also take natural supplements such as TUDCA.
Androgens typically have a negative impact upon lipids, but Winstrol is one of the worst offenders given that it is a DHT-derived steroid and binds strongly to the androgen receptor. When taking Winstrol it is highly likely that good cholesterol (HDL) will decrease, and bad cholesterol (LDL) will increase, which can cause a negative impact upon heart health. A diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids and green, leafy vegetables is the best way to avoid these affects (although it will never be possible to completely avoid them).
Joint pain is synonymous with Winstrol use. Although it appears to have a positive impact upon cartilage, collagen and tendons, those using Winstrol will often experience mild to severe joint issues – particularly when lifting heavy weights. Stacking with Deca Durabolin can help to alleviate this, although a diet high in fatty acids and supplementation of MSM and other natural joint support supplements can help.
Estrogenic & Androgenic
Winstrol does not aromatise to estrogen; therefore, estrogen-related side effects are extremely unlikely. However, despite its low androgenic rating (20), it can be quite androgenic, causing such side effects as acne and hair loss (Male Pattern Baldness) in those predisposed.
Winstrol vs. Anavar: Which is better?
This is an age-old debate that will no doubt continue to rage on indefinitely. Ultimately, it is down to personal choice. Some will prefer Winstrol, other Anavar. But, if we try to examine it objectively, we can see that there is a difference between the two (most people tend to think they do exactly the same job).
If you’re looking for a steroid that will produce exceptional strength gains, modest lean muscle gains, increase the potency of other steroids in your system (by decreasing SHGB) and give your aggression the gym, then Winstrol is the steroid for you.
If you want something milder that won’t produce as significant gains in terms of muscle mass and strength, yet will still allow you to alter your physique in a positive way, Anavar will be the better choice.
In general, Winstrol will cause more side effects than Anavar, but it will differ from individual to individual.
Should I use oral or injectable Winstrol?
If you don’t mind injecting yourself and the typically horrendous PIP (Post Injection Pain) that comes with then by all means use injectable Winstrol. However, if you’re more a fan of staying pain free, then the oral version is the way forward for sure. Plus, you’ll save money on needles, syringes and wipes. In terms if results there will be very little difference between the two.
How should Winstrol be stacked/cycled?
It is imperative that those using Winstrol know how to take it correctly; therefore, in this section we will look at the best way to cycle it.
How much Winstrol a person takes will depend upon several main factors: If they are taking it with any other steroids; if they’ve ever taken steroids before; their current levels of muscle mass.
Newcomers to steroids should take lower doses of steroids. Where Winstrol is concerned this would be between 40mg and 50mg per day.
Those with a steroid cycle or two under their belts (and therefore more muscle mass) may wish to up the dosage to between 50mg-80mg per day.
Whereas heavily-muscled bodybuilders with lots of steroid cycle experience would consider doses of beyond 80mg per day.
If a person was taking another oral anabolic steroid at the same time as Winstrol, the dosages of both would need to be reduced.
A Winstrol only cycle is typically between six and eight weeks in length. However, to ensure optimal liver health, full blood checks and other health tests would need to be conducted every four weeks to ensure everything is within range.
If using Winstrol as part of a longer injectable cycle, it would be used for around four weeks – but can be used more than once during one cycle. For example, a 12 week cutting cycle alongside testosterone – a person could take Winstrol for the first four weeks as the testosterone kicks in, and the last four weeks to finish of and polish the physique.
Winstrol can be stacked with pretty much any other steroid, but is typically stacked with testosterone, trenbolone, masteron and in some cases Anavar.
